Periodontics

Periodontics is the specialist branch of dentistry that deals with gums and other supporting and surrounding structures of teeth and implants, and the diseases and conditions which impact upon them.

The health of the gums and bone supporting teeth and implants is vital to maintain a functional and aesthetic dentition. Periodontal (or gum) disease is an advanced condition of inflammation and infection of the gums and other tissues and supporting structures of the teeth. It usually starts with gum inflammation called gingivitis, but can advance to generalized periodontitis, if not treated.

Gingivitis is very common in the Australian population and even advanced and severe periodonitis is quite widespread. Periodontal disease has also been implicated as an important factor in an increased risk of major systemic problems including heart disease, strokes and even low birth weight babies. Untreated periodontal disease can result in tooth, gum and bone loss, a reduction in your dental aesthetics and function and more widespread health problems.

Daily brushing and flossing can help to prevent gingivitis, however, even with the most diligent home dental care, you still can develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.

Specialist Periodontics involves the professional management of periodontal disease to minimize the damage to the gums and support structures of the teeth. Gingivitis is a reversible condition, but severe periodontitis is not. The stage of the disease determines the appropriate treatment plan, but generally, Periodontics involves special cleaning and debridement of the soft tissue and pockets around the teeth. There may even be a requirement for surgical intervention to assist in access to the hard and soft tissues. It is even possible in some situations for Periodontists to perform regenerative procedures which can reverse the effects of periodontal disease. Home care by the patient is a very important part of a periodontal treatment plan.

Specialist Periodontists also place dental implants and perform procedures to make teeth look better, to reverse the effects of recession (gum grafts) and to provide better access for restoration of teeth. Common periodontal procedures include scaling and careful root cleaning, periodontal surgery, the placement of dental implants, bone and gum grafting, crown lengthening, gum lifts and other cosmetic gum surgery.
